Being in the portraiture industry for over 12 years, we always get asked questions about outfits and styling for family portraits.
Below you will find our simple style guide for choosing the right outfits, colors, and styling for your portraits
Outfit and Style Guide

We recommend wearing darker colors. Navy, burgundy and forest green are excellent choices. They bring out the eyes of each individual and they look great in any home.
Although white is a nice color, it’s not recommended for portrait art.
Why? It washes out your skin tone, reflects studio lighting, and can be unflattering to most people. We recommend selecting darker colors as mentioned above.

We all love jewellery, but in portraits, less can be more. Keep it simple and tasteful so that it compliments YOU not the other way round.
Tip: Bringing in antique or family jewellery that are heirloom pieces adds to your family story and your legacy -
We encourage you to come in your best-dressed outfits.
We never have clients say they wished they had dressed more casually.
Clients ALWAYS wish that they had taken advantage of such an opportunity to dress up with their family and make it an occasion.
Gentlemen
Yes…it’s time to get out your tuxedo or suit and put it on. Remember this is your forever portrait. You want to look and feel sharp, regal and a man of your family.
Ladies
Any excuse to dress up is a good excuse, right? Find yourself a dress that makes your feel amazing and look amazing! Your confidence, love, and passion for your family will really show through your portrait when you are feeling incredible!
Children
They look perfect in any outfit, but for this occasion, we recommend that you dress them in beautiful dresses/button-up shirts with dress pants. Always make note of their shoes too!

While ripped jeans, sweaters, and hoodies are trendy outfits for dinner dates, shopping, or a night out with friends and family, we don’t recommend them for your family portraits.
Remember this is your forever portrait; your legacy to be passed on from generation to generation. You want your children to look at your portraits and know their legacy, their story, and feel that this right here is my family unit, and I am proud to be part of it.
